This chapter covers regular expressions, search and replace, and the many sorts of Ruby classes (Float, integer, Symbol, Struct), describes the Dir class and its methods, as well as the MatchData class, and explains regex and classes in Ruby. Ruby regular expressions, or Ruby regex for short, allow one to discover specific patterns inside a text. Validation and parsing are two applications of ruby regex. Ruby regex may use to validate email addresses as well as IP addresses. Ruby regex expressions are declared by separating them with two forward slashes. In Ruby, the Float class is a subclass of the Numeric class. The Integer class in Ruby serves as the foundation for the two concrete classes that contain whole numbers. The Symbol class objects represent the names found within the Ruby interpreter. The Dir class in Ruby manages directories, while the File class manages files.
