Introduction and Importance of Machine Learning Techniques in Cyber Security

With the adoption of the internet for so many of the tasks of human life, from storage of sensitive documents to communication or paying a vegetable vendor, its vulnerabilities are also being exposed and exploited for malicious purposes. One has to defend oneself from this exploitation and the whole field of cyber security is dedicated to doing this. Many systems have been put forth and detailed research has been carried out for many decades to secure cyber space. One of the most effective ways to deal with cyber threats and attacks is the adaptation of machine learning and deep learning in the field of cyber security. The field of machine learning has gained a lot of traction in recent times because of the many applications it has in different fields of business. One important application of machine learning is cyber security. Securing cyber space requires the defending systems to be dynamic and this is the most important reason why the field of machine learning is being adopted in the security domain. Machine learning and its specialization, deep learning, makes the cyber defense system more robust to tackle new threats and attacks. The chapter takes a look at how and where machine learning and deep learning are playing an important role in cyber threat mitigation.
