Mr. NAND Flash

Dong‐Won Kim · 2023

Lim Hyung-Kyu is one of the most successful engineers-turned-top-executives at Samsung Electronics. He worked for 34 years at Samsung Electronics, from 1976 to 2009, first as a talented research engineer and then as a brilliant executive. His two most important contributions at Samsung include the early development of NAND flash memory in the 1990s and the rapid advance of the System LSI chips in the early 2000s. As “a true Samsung man to the bone,” Lim played the important role of “problem-solver” whenever the company ran into trouble in the 1990s and 2000s. After retirement from Samsung, he served as vice chairman of SK Hynix in 2014–2016, contributing greatly to the speedy stabilization and further development of SK Hynix.
