Advocating for AI-Driven Threats
Lukasz Marcin Swiatek, Marina Vujnović, Chris Galloway, Dean Kruckeberg · 2023
This chapter addresses the seemingly uncritical stance that strategic communicators often take towards AI, not just within the profession, but also in society at large. Although AI developments certainly entail varied benefits, they also generate numerous issues, including threats to relationships and communities. The chapter situates its concerns about AI within the context of globally expanding neoliberal capitalism. It also considers the role being played by technology companies that currently lack sufficient regulatory oversight and discusses the impacts of problematic AI developments on democracies. The chapter underscores the need for communication professionals to take a less-positive stance towards AI technologies and serve as critical voices, not just for their profession, but also for society at large.
