How to Tell a Fish from a Bee: Constructing Meta-Heuristic Search Behaviour Characteristics
Lauren Hayward, Andries Petrus Engelbrecht · 2023
New meta-heuristics are often neglected in terms of the methods used to describe them. Uninspired descriptions are given of the speed to the global minima and the number of local minima found, but little to describe the search characteristics that make it possible to do so. The lack of search behaviour descriptors results in a loss. Without discussing the tools used to make meta-heuristics efficient, we are unable to apply those same tools elsewhere. By using such descriptors, older meta-heuristics can be improved using new ideas, and new meta-heuristics can be continually iterated on. Without such a cycle, all meta-heuristics are destined to be shelved.
