In a wireless sensor network (WSN), nodes are constrained by their limited energy supply, communication range, and local computational capabilities. Data routing should be optimized to allow nodes to conserve energy, improving the network’s overall lifetime. Among many routing protocols, a clustering protocol can play an essential role in preserving WSN energy. In this case, cluster head nodes’ selection depends on selecting elements that directly affect nodes’ power. This paper proposes a new algorithm that incorporates a Fuzzy-based Zone-Clusters Heads Selections for Heterogeneous Wireless sensor networks (FZCHS). The most critical elements affecting the nodes’ lifetime are identified and combined using the optimization fuzzy logic approach. Cluster heads are selected based on two proven factors, the number of neighbouring nodes and a new component, which is the nodes’ lifetime as cluster heads. The latter represents the maximum number that a node can contribute as a cluster head in the network. Simulation results proved the effectiveness of the FZCHS Protocol in preserving network stability at a rate of 24.375 %, 39.361 %, and 65.631 %, and network lifetime of 8.077 %, 33.673 %, and 56.945 % compared to FBECS, E-CAFL, and LEACH-FC, respectively.
