UK government questions identity

C. Edwards · Engineering & Technology · 2023

Proving you are and what you are able to do is often far from straightforward and convenient in the UK. A report from the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, and backed by former opposition leader William Hague, states a case for making it all easier. Amid proposals for improving technical education and bringing artificial intelligence into government, the report called on the UK government to “accelerate the implementation of a single digital-ID system for all residents, providing a digital wallet to access it, while ensuring that digital and physical copies of ID have the same legal status”. The authors pointed to Ukraine's Diia as an example. That system lets citizens load documents, such as driving licences, into their phones and use them in place of conventional paper credentials.
