An Introduction to Meta-Heuristic Optimization

Before we can embark upon this journey of ours to learn about computational intelligence-based optimization methods, we must first establish a common language to see what an optimization problem actually is. In this chapter, we tend to take a deep dive into the world of optimization to understand the fundamental components that are used in the structure of a typical optimization problem. We would be introduced to the technical terminology used in this field, and more importantly, we aim to grasp the basic principles of optimization methods. As a final note, we would learn about the general idea behind meta-heuristic optimization algorithms and what this term essentially means. By the end of this chapter, we will also come to understand why it is essential to have more than one of these optimization algorithms in our repertoire if we tend to use this branch of optimization method as the primary option to handle real-world complex optimization problems.
