Logbook is an important legal document for recording and analyzing navigation conditions, accumulating data, and summarizing experience. The completeness and accuracy of manual logbooks are largely determined by the navigational officer's proficiency and status. Voyage Date Recorder records objective navigation information, but its content doesn't contain any navigation logic. In this paper, an electronic logbook based on finite state machine is proposed. By abstracting the voyage into ship's initial state and a subsequent chain of events, a finite state machine can represent all states, events, and their logical relationship in logbook, which processes log events during the voyage to obtain log information, and then saves these data for reappearing at any time.
