SDN-based QoS architectures in Edge-IoT Systems: A Comprehensive Analysis

Nogaye Lo, Ibrahima Niang · 2023

As the Internet of Things (IoT) expands, edge computing is key to offloading the processing and analysis of data collected from IoT devices at or near the point of collection. Thus, Edge computing ensures reduced latency, improved data security and bandwidth utilization. Moreover, Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Edge computing collaboration can dynamically route traffic based on network conditions and policies. This can enable more efficient use of network resources and improve network management. However, in an Edge-IoT system, Quality of Service (QoS) becomes essential and critical in order to ensure that real-time applications and services receive the necessary network resources and prioritization to maintain their performance. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive analysis of SDN-based QoS architectures promise for supporting of service requirements in Edge-IoT systems. This research provides a comprehensive survey investigating SDN and Edge computing collaboration. We propose also an overview of SDN and its potential benefits for introducing QoS in Edge-IoT systems. We build a taxonomy and produce a discussion of different aspects of SDN-based QoS architectures.
