Technology advancements have led to an increase in the use of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), however these networks suffer from the energy hole problem because of the uneven load distribution among the sensor nodes (SNs). Mobile Sink (MS) has been presented as a potential solution for balancing energy usage and enhancing network lifetime. MS can acquire data either directly from the SNs or through rendezvous points (RPs). Direct data collection increases the MS route length, resulting in data collection latency and the buffer overflow issue. To address these difficulties and improve network efficiency, rendezvous-based data collection techniques have been developed. This study provides a complete review of rendezvous-based data collection methodologies using MS in WSNs, analyzing and contrasting the advantages and disadvantages of each approach, as well as outlining unsolved problems and future research opportunities in this field.
