Strings to Tie a Universe Together
Christopher Robert Kitchin · 2023
In the first journey, we found that to explain observations such as the high level of isotropy of the microwave background radiation, an enormous expansion of the universe must have occurred very early on in its evolution. This chapter looks in more detail at the galaxies themselves. It examines how the lumpy structure for the universe could have arisen from the extremely smooth conditions after the inflationary period. So how could the galaxies, clusters, superclusters etc have come into being? While a long way from being established as the correct answer, current ideas are concentrating on the possible role played by cosmic strings. Apart from the congruence of names, cosmic strings and the strings of superstring theory are totally different entities. The high energy marbles along the interface in our analogy would be the cosmic strings of the bubble-plastic universe.
