PolyDDoSchain - Collaborative Volumetric Distributed Denial of Service Attack Detection and Prevention using Blockchain Technology

Darshi Patel, Dhiren B. Patel · 2023

The availability of a system is one of the significant requirements to perform any operation in a system, but Distributed Denial of service attacks (DDoS) targets the availability of system and services by flooding system resources. So, it becomes a crucial task to mitigate DDoS attacks at its initial stage. Detection and mitigation are performed at a single system that does not work correctly as the nature of the attack is distributed. Many solutions only secure their networks by implementing Intrusion Detection System(IDS) and DDoS mitigation solutions on their network. As Distributed nature of the attack, these individual solutions cannot be effective. A collaborative mitigation solution is needed to deal with this distributed type of attack. Some collaborative solutions exist in the marketplace. But Implementation of a Distributed solution to mitigate DDoS attacks has many challenges like transparency, feasibility and security, and authenticity of the collaboration process. Emerging technology like Blockchain provides all these features which would be helpful in collaboration processes between different peers. It would also become a significant solution for other network threats and attacks. This research study presents how blockchain technology plays a vital role to mitigate Volumetric DDoS attacks in different domains. This study has proposed a collaborative solution to detect volumetric DDoS attacks on multiple domains and share attack information in a transparent and distributed way with other collaborators. The authenticity of attack information and data is also put in concern while designing this blockchain-based solution. The proposed solution allows attack detection performed at one domain to become advantageous for other collaborative domains so attack detection overhead is reduced significantly. This study deals with attack detection tasks generally performed at an individual system level and build collaboration between peers or networks using blockchain technology. Implementation of this solution is deployed on Polygon’s official test network, Mumbai Net. Moreover, this study has performed experiments to test this proposed collaborative solution. Simulation results show that the proposed system is feasible, secure, effective, and highly accurate in terms of the detection of DDoS attacks.
