In any science one usually has to have some metrics that are related to some phenomena before studying it in detail. For computing, such metrics are about 50 years old and come in three forms: how we “count” computation performed by an algorithm, how we group problems according to the complexity of any algorithms that can solve them, and what kinds of computing models are sufficient to solve them.
