Chapter 11: Systolic Computing

Section 5.7 introduced a variant of a DFA, called a transducer, that provided an extra output that could be fed to other automata. Chapter 10 on cellular automata discussed theoretically how arrays of interconnected transducers could form a computing surface that could model a number of phenomena by performing local computations involving only immediate neighbors. While of significant interest, implementing a large number of such automata, especially in ways that permitted reconfiguration for alternative algorithms, was difficult, and thus limited the theory’s early practical use.
