RRG and Cheyenne simple sentences
Avelino Corral Esteban · 2023
A discussion of complex sentences presupposes an analysis of simple sentences, hence Chapter 2 intends to offer such information, by applying RRG to the study of simple sentences in Cheyenne. Thus, it gives an account of the principal morphosyntactic features of Cheyenne, such as the verb structure, the Person Hierarchy and the Semantic Function Hierarchy, the direct / inverse system, and the proximate / obviative distinction. Given the focus of the book on the interaction of syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, the last part of this chapter includes an account of the relation between word order and information structure, and the influence of pragmatics on morphosyntactic coding and macrorole assignment, which illustrate the pervasive influence of pragmatics in all areas of Cheyenne grammar.
