The HERS Institutes
Lynn M. Gangone · 2023
This book is about revolutionary concepts of leadership and the implications of these concepts for leadership development programs in higher education. If any programs have stood out as a model of revolutionary leadership and a model of the application of the revolutionaries’ beliefs to leadership development programming, it is the institutes of HERS (Higher Education Resource Services). The five distinctive HERS programs include the original programs, the HERS Bryn Mawr Summer Institute for Women in Higher Education Administration and the HERS Institute for Women in Higher Education Administration at Wellesley College (both begun in 1976). Nearly two decades later HERS collaborated with the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA) to create NACWAA/HERS in 1994. With support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation the U.S.-based HERS South Africa program began in 2000; subsequently, the HERS-SA Program, based at the University of Cape Town in South Africa, was created and continues to serve African women. The newest HERS program, the Institute for Women in Higher Education Administration at the University of Denver, welcomed its inaugural class in fall 2007.
