The 21st century is defined as the era of technological development. One such development is in the wireless domain. Though Wireless Sensor Networks can be easily deployed in harsh and hostile conditions, they have the disadvantage of limited computation and communication. Thus, a new technology, Cognitive radio is used to overcome these disadvantages. Cognitive radio technology is used in Wireless Sensor Networks thus forming Cognitive Radio Sensor Network which enable nodes to parameter in compliance with the area of operations and dynamically access licensed spectrum without significantly compromising with the transmission of the primary user. Spectrum resource scarcity and intrinsic energy constraints are issues that cognitive radio sensing networks must cope with. By enhancing spectrum reliability and effectiveness and successfully counteracting the detrimental impacts that exist in the surroundings of the cognitive ratio sensor network, cooperative spectrum sensing methods can enhance the performance of cognitive radio networks. Thus, the innovative spectrum sensing and node selection techniques presented in this paper aim to jointly improve spectrum and energy efficiency. It also proposes an algorithm which enhances the effective use of spectrum which in turn enhances the energy efficiency and thus improving the transmission.
