Lgbtqa+ students and career advising
Carolyn Meeker, Richard A. Sprott, Craig M. McGill · 2023
In this chapter, the authors provide an overview of the career advising needs of LGBTQA+ students, offering suggestions for how academic advisors can help students navigate these decisions. Additionally, they discuss concerns related to work environments and employment decisions, identity considerations, and implications for practice. The atmosphere of a work environment greatly impacts one’s career decisions. Advisors should seek to understand how intersecting identities, particularly marginalized identities, affect their students’ experiences and decisions. Minority stress is considered distinct, chronic, and socially based. Alongside a structural approach to identity that emphasizes the content of the identity, how it relates to other identities and roles, or the centrality of the identity to one’s sense of self, there is a narrative approach to identity. Many factors influence college students’ choices about majors, coursework, and career planning. Advisors are also faced with a wide range of individual differences among students that must be considered to provide effective advising.
