Creating an lgbtqa+-inclusive campus
Casey J. Self, Natalie S. Oliner · 2023
LGBTQA+ students investigating college possibilities can easily conduct online searches for information related to campus climate and services. This can include websites that rank the most gay-friendly campuses, such as the Campus Pride Index, as well as web pages identifying campus or community LGBTQA+ resources. As LGBTQA+ students are exposed to a variety of perspectives and opinions related to sexual and gender identity, they will need support in navigating and coping with the range of emotions they and their non-LGBTQA+ peers will experience. Specific LGBTQA+ welcome events that highlight resources and promote LGBTQA+ community opportunities can include an open house or meet and greet at the LGBTQA+ center or social parties and celebrations hosted by LGBTQA+ organizations on campus. A common strategy to promote an LGBTQA+-friendly campus is to create a Safe Zone workshop in which interested campus community members can learn more about the LGBTQA+ community and resources to support LGBTQA+ individuals.
