Enhancing the SGID and SGID Programs

Carol A. Hurney, Christine M. Rener, Jordan D. Troisi · 2023

This chapter focuses on expanding the reach of the small group instructional diagnosis (SGID) across the institution, enhancing consultant training to support better SGID conversations, improving the ways SGID results inform course corrections, and creating spaces for dialogue about the SGID and SGID results. The reach of the SGID program reflects the number of SGIDs the group or program conducts each semester and the demographics of the instructors who engage with this midcourse feedback experience. To improve the skills of SGID consultants, consultant training should include opportunities to enhance conceptual knowledge about teaching. Professional growth of SGID consultants should encourage self-reflection activities that explore the stages of instructional consultant development and other consulting frameworks to inform their ongoing development as SGID consultants. Making the most of the SGID results requires all members of the village—the SGID consultant, faculty, and students—to focus on midcourse corrections that improve learning.
