AN OVERVIEW OF LEGAL DOCUMENT SUMMARIZATION TECHNIQUES
International Research Journal of Modernization in Engineering Technology and Science · 2023
The sheer volume and diverse formats of legal information make it difficult and time-consuming to access and extract pertinent content from legal documents.Automated text summarization techniques offer a solution by condensing legal texts into concise summaries, enabling users to quickly grasp the main points. This paper presents a thorough analysis of existing legal document summarization techniques, focusing on extractive and abstractive approaches. It explores classical extractive summarization algorithms, the role of rhetorical status recognition, headnote-based summarization, normalization-based approaches, and semantic relationshipbased summarization. The evaluation of these techniques is based on various metrics such as ROUGE, BLEU, Cosine similarity scores, F-score and Accuracy. The findings highlight the effectiveness of graph-based summarization techniques, the significance of incorporating contextual features like rhetorical status recognition, the benefits of headnote-based summarization for concise case summaries, the impact of normalization-based approaches for domain-specific summarization, and the use of semantic relationships for patent summarization. The paper provides insights into the strengths, limitations, and challenges associated with each technique, paving the way for future advancements in legal document summarization
