Next Generation Connectionless IP router architecture with Switching Delay for URLLC Services

Yoichiro Ueno, Akihiko Tsukahara, Noriharu Miyaho · 2023

The demand for low-latency communication services, such as URLLC (Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communication), is increasing in the era of 5G and beyond. However, there are still several unresolved issues that need to be addressed. To solve these issues, an innovative connectionless (CL) IP router architecture that can be used in both edge nodes and core transit nodes is proposed. A high-speed switching mechanism alone cannot guarantee minimal IP switching delay and quality of service (QoS). Therefore, a new approach is needed to mitigate variable switching delays caused by fluctuations in outgoing traffic volume, which is a conventional approach. This router architecture can achieve less than 1 millisecond end-to-end delay and less than 1 microsecond switching delay for long-distance real-time communication services. Recent advances in CMOS technology and optoelectronic device technology integration have made a wide range of URLLC network services possible for 5G and beyond. To confirm the functionality of the proposed router, an equivalent IP switch architecture was designed using commercially available FPGA and VHDL (VHSIC hardware description language) for critical path and circuit synthesis and simulation.
