Introduction to R Studio and Packages

David Melamed, Long Doan · 2023

This chapter deals with R and RStudio, and describes the additional tools that are required to work with regression models for limited dependent variables. It discusses objects in R, packages, data visualization in R, and the catregs package. R is a free, comprehensive, and inclusive computing environment, and is an object-oriented programming language. RStudio is an integrated development environment that functions as a wrapper for base R. R can directly import data from stand-alone statistical software packages but doing so requires downloading a package that is not built into the base R installation. Packages can include one or more functions, help files associated with each function, data files, vignette examples of package features, and/or additional ancillary files. The core of the package is six functions for working with the fitted values of model objects. The functions define a pipeline for both generating sets of predicted values and estimates of uncertainty, and for testing or probing how those predicted values vary.
