Expression of Absorption Data
Steven W. Collier, Robert L. Bronaugh · 2023
The absorption of chemicals percutaneously is studied by investigators from divergent backgrounds. As with all experimental results, there is a need to measure and express percutaneous absorption data in a manner which is relevant, concise, and unambiguous. This chapter discusses this need in the context of the current percutaneous absorption literature and the application of reported results by its readers. The selection of the dose or range of dosages in a percutaneous absorption study depends on the intended use or relevance of the data. The effect of penetration rates on cutaneous metabolism of a toxic or therapeutic agent might significantly affect a physiologically based pharmacokinetic model incorporating dermal absorption and may need to be considered when extrapolating percutaneous absorption data to toxicological endpoints determined by a different dosing route. The data presented from a percutaneous absorption study should include a description of the exact conditions of dosing and an accountability of the test material.
