Most of the traditional cryptographic algorithms are based on mathematical models and try to perform encryption/decryption by factoring large numbers as their prime values. Both public and private key encryption uses mathematical operations to secure the information. However, these mathematical based cryptographic models are becoming vulnerable as the computation power is increasing. Also, the evolution in modern mathematics like factoring large integers are making it possible to crack traditional cryptography algorithms. In this chapter, we would like to elaborate the issues and the challenges with the traditional mathematical model based cryptographic algorithms. Also, we intend to elaborate the need of integrating quantum physics and cryptography to ensure the security of confidential data. Quantum cryptography is one of emerging technologies in the cyber world. The scope of this paper covers the weaknesses of modern digital cryptosystems, the fundamental concepts of quantum cryptography, the real-world implementation of this technology along with its limitations, and finally the future direction in which quantum cryptography is headed towards.
