A Survey on Hardware Security Techniques for Preventing Reverse Engineering Attacks

To protect the intellectual property of circuit design and/or the secret key for data encryption, it is an important task for IC designers to develop hardware security techniques to prevent reverse engineering attacks. In this paper, we will study three types of reverse engineering attacks: circuit extraction, SAT-based attacks, and side channel attacks. The backgrounds for each type of reverse engineering attack will be presented. Then, the countermeasures for each type of reverse engineering attack will also be discussed. Finally, we will point out some directions for future researches.
