Events as Facts

Erwin Tegtmeier · 2000

A fact ontology in the tradition of logical atomism is sketched. The notions of fact and event are considered and distinguished from the respective ontological categories. An ontological analysis of changes as facts is given with the important relation of temporal part and it is argued that events always involve changes. Thus the reader is lead to the main thesis that events in the costumary sense belong the ontological category of facts. Davidson’s conception of event is criticised. And finally the basically empiricist concept of event is connected with its adversary the Aristotelian tradition of substance ontology.
