Video and film production is the acquisition or shooting phase of a motion picture project. The term coverage is used to describe the amount and variety of footage obtained by the videographer or camera operator while filming a particular subject or scene. Shots are the basic building blocks of film grammar and visual narratives and are used in combination to form scenes and sequences. The chapter introduces shot designations like closeup and wide shot and explains how variables like camera and subject placement, field of view, focal length, etc. contribute to framing and composition. Primary, secondary, and tertiary motion are used to add visual interest and energy to shots, and often work best in combination with one another. Lighting instruments and modifiers like scrims, reflectors, and flags are used to illuminate the subject, enhancing, and controlling light, and for achieving a desired mood and tone.
