Statistically speaking, a significant number of data breaches have been caused by flaws in applications and by the hackers who attempted to exploit them. In addition, hackers and threat actors repeatedly target payment applications including ecommerce sites. They do so because that’s where the money is. Payment card applications have been specifically targeted for two decades or more. This is why the major card brands have, and do still maintain, their own payment card security programs in addition to supporting the spirit and intent of the PCI SSC and the PCI Data Security Standard (DSS).
