The broad area of the Internet of Things represents an important milestone in the history of the Internet because for the first time it brings a host of technological advances data communications together with large-scale advances in data analytics, the combination of which has the potential to shape the future data-driven society. The IoT revolution itself is not so much about new networks and systems that enable the collection and management of data from diverse sources, but instead it is about increased access to data as the foundation of the future data-driven society. As such, the various aspects of the supply chain of data-from the devices to the applications in the cloud-require rigorous protection from the various possible attacks.1,2 Two keys aspects that make the current IoT revolution somewhat different from prior technological advances on the Internet is the potential speed for data availability and the potential breadth of data types that may become available. The lessons of big data from the past decade has taught us that data increases in value when it is shared.6 There are numerous circumstances and use-cases today where data sharing would help communities and cities in finding solutions to societal challenges (e.g., the spread of diseases; urban planning; climate change). However, there are a number of challenges in the sharing of data-many of which have become more acute and pressing in the face of the current pace of IoT technology developments: • Tension between data sharing and privacy:There is an apparent tension or conflict between the needs of data sharing and the need for preserving the privacy of the owner or source of the data.
