Cloud and Edge Computing Architectures for Future Cloud Computing

Vitesh Sethi, Avita Katal, Shubham Dabas · 2023

Cloud technology is progressing towards increased dispersion over multi-clouds and the integration of diverse devices, as indicated by the Internet of Things (IoT) in the context of edge, cloud, and fog computing. Lightweight virtualization techniques are advantageous in this architectural configuration, with smaller but still virtualized machines hosting program and infrastructure capabilities, as well as the logistics necessary to manage them. Edge computing refers to all the activities of IoT nodes linked to a remote cloud at the network’s edge or limit. After a decade characterized by a rising dependence on centralized third-party public cloud services, the adoption of edge computing platforms and IoT devices indicates a complete lateral swing back to decentralized data management. On the other hand, large cloud providers are keen to extend cloud storage to the edge. As a result, companies must determine how closely they want to bind their developing infrastructure to a single provider. This chapter covers the introduction and background of edge computing architectures, as well as the integration of both technologies. The chapter includes information on edge and cloud computing 142 architectures, as well as their application, challenges and concludes with a case study.
