This chapter provides an introduction to timing, delay, and functional decomposition. The dark sections of the microprocessor are mostly cache memory, and as the people can see, memory takes up most of the microprocessor chip area. Two types of circuit delays often cause timing problems in a digital circuit: gate delay and interconnect delay. The propagation delays vary due to process variation within each technology, so typical values are listed on specification sheets. Although overall delays are an unwanted nuisance, some circuit designers have found various ways to utilize this unwanted characteristic in a myriad of applications. The finite timing delays allow for certain design metrics that digital designers adhere to: Path delays can be calculated for any path from input to output. The critical path is the path that exhibits the longest delay, and critical delayor critical path delay is the delay associated with the critical path.
