Containerizing Your Workflow on the Desktop

David Wall, Catherine Vacher · 2023

This chapter details containerization, which is a way of stripping one's applications down to their essentials and running only those key parts as an easily managed module—a container on a host computer. Virtual machines (VMs) provided an intermediate solution. With VM, one could have images of applications stored as large files. The hardware, in a VM setup, is virtualized. A special software layer called a hypervisor manages the sharing of the hardware across all of the VM running under it. Docker is one of many implementations of OS-level virtualization. It represents the de facto standard in this technology and is the basis for all Amazon Web Services container management services. Central to the Docker experience is the Docker Hub, which is a set of repositories in which Docker images are stored.
