Energy Aware Cluster Head Rotation for D2D Multicasting

Low energy consumption is a significant performance metric for battery operated device which is specially suitable to operate in a disaster prone areas. Device to Device (D2D) multicasting is expected to be energy efficient for providing suitable communications to a group of users served by a common device known as cluster head (CH). However, due to multiple influencing parameters the consumed energy of the CH becomes higher in comparison to the cluster members. To handle this issue, we have proposed a suitable CH rotation algorithm for implementing the energy efficient D2D multicasting. The objective of the proposed approach is to provide energy efficient cluster based D2D communications to a suitable number of selected target users such that the consumed energy of the operating CH does not exceed the battery capacity of the device. This is implemented through a suitable CH rotation technique that operate in duty cycle mode to serve a common set of cluster members. We validate our approach through extensive simulations in network simulator 2 (NS2) and through a comparative study with the existing approach.
