Timing; Phrasing; Dynamics—Recapitulation

Timing is a major element in how it affects the performance of a movement sequence. In dance training it is a rarity to explore subtle changes in timing in a movement pattern. Specific timing has been incorporated into some of the Reading Studies, particularly those where stepping or landing from a spring needs to be on a specific beat in the accompanying music. This chapter investigates structured musical timing. Timing between actions can affect the flow of the movement sequence. It is one thing to read and execute a series of movements; it is another to produce a sequence which has cohesion, kinetic logic, and expression. Each kind of movement has its own kinetic logic. There must be a line of development for a movement phrase to have such logic. The timing of minor movements, indicated by minor direction pins, is often made more understandable through the addition of a phrasing bow.
