Basics of Time Series

Arash Gharehbaghi · 2023

The author believes that intuition of the readers from time series analysis might be substantially different from the main concepts of this topic which convinced the author to dedicate a section for introducing concepts of time series analysis. This demands a clear understanding of how to model the time series which became another section of this chapter. From the three general models of time series analysis: deterministic, chaotic, and stochastic models, the last one is much more employed by the researchers due to its strength in delivering practical solutions for different case studies. This will be addressed in a separate section. This chapter of the book, innovatively describes cyclic time series, a group of the stochastic time series with some repetitive contents. Sector definition is another subsection of this book which originally deals with a powerful mean for the learning purpose. Two different schemes of using sectors, uniform and growing-time sectors, are introduced in this section. A group of the semi-cyclic time series can be seen in many real-life scenarios, named partially cyclic time series, which is described in an independent subsection. Finally, two different objectives of time series analysis, prediction and classification, are introduced under independent sections.
