Blockchain for Internet of Medical Things
Pranalini Joshi, Prasad Gokhale · 2023
The set of medical devices and medical applications which are linked to healthcare information technology (IT) systems over the internet is called Internet of Medical Things (IoMT). These IoMT-enabled devices produce and transmit massive volumes of healthcare data. Healthcare is a data-exhaustive domain whereby a mammoth amount of data is produced, maintained, circulated, and accessed daily. According to a survey published by Stanford Medicine, healthcare data is growing at an astronomical rate. Healthcare data stores sensitive and personal information that be can attractive to cybercriminals. In the healthcare industry, various stockholders include patients, doctors, insurance companies, pathology laboratories and governing bodies. As healthcare data is used often by all stakeholders, confidentiality and integrity of this data should be protected from unofficial access attempts within networks, as well as from external attackers. Ensuring the security of electronic health records (EHRs) is a crucial and challenging task. Therefore, to maintain a definite trust during exchange of EHRs among all stakeholders and to secure data from misuse, a technology is needed—and blockchain technology can be used. This focuses on use of blockchain framework, its challenges, and further research in the healthcare domain.
