Cognitive radio (CR) enabled WLAN is more beneficial in the context of its quality of services and managing spectrum scarcity. Mostly, WLAN is operated with 802.11 (DCF) MAC protocol in AP-based infrastructure mode of its interconnections. But for small distances, WLAN peer-to-peer AdHoc mode of interconnections is more useful, such as conferencing and document file transfer without going through AP. This paper proposes a method for analyzing the throughput and delay performance of the 802.11 (DCF) protocol while taking into account a WLAN that supports CR in both its AdHoc and infrastructure modes. Here, CSMA based 802.11 (DCF) protocol is followed by spectrum sensing (To identify the primary user activity) and evaluate the delay and throughput. The experimental results show that the normalized throughput of the AdHoc mode is approximately 87% higher, and the average delay is approximately 0.7% lower as compared to the infrastructure mode of the proposed CR network scenarios.
