Augmented, Mixed, and Virtual Reality

Lei Chen · 2023

The public’s experience of digital gaming has long been bonded with screens since video games first became commercially available in the 1970s. Virtual, augmented, and mixed reality are the latest generation of human–computer interfaces that hold the promise of upgrading the way users interact with virtual objects and elevating video games to new heights in the near future. However, the three terms are often misunderstood and muddled in practice, and their importance in gaming is still overlooked. This chapter clarifies the relationship between these concepts, highlights the different implications of their respective technical features for gaming, and provides a practical introduction to the development lineage, recent advances, future prospects, and unsolved problems of virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality gaming.
