Software Fault Localization for Programs with Multiple Bugs

Ruizhi Gao, W. Eric Wong, Rui Abreu · 2023

This chapter introduces fault localization techniques for programs with multiple bugs. It explains the traditional one-bug-at-a-time (OBA) technique. The chapter presents the localization of multiple bugs using algorithms from integer linear programming. It also provides an advanced fault localization technique for locating multiple bugs in parallel. For the OBA technique, in each debugging iteration, all failed test cases and all successful test cases are used in conjunction with a fault localization technique to generate a suspiciousness ranking. To achieve the goal of enabling developers to simultaneously debug multiple faults in parallel, Jones et al. proposed a parallel-debugging process. MSeer is proposed as a fault localization technique for locating multiple bugs in parallel. There are four novel aspects of MSeer. Spectrum-based fault localization is among the best performing techniques for fault localization.
