The evolving hardware security primitives play a critical role in safeguarding the integrity, reliability, and authenticity of integrated circuits (IC’s) and electronic systems. Unclonable physical functions are a special class of circuits that take advantage of the natural variances in manufacturing processes to produce one-of-a-kind, untraceable IDs and secret keys. PUFs have become a popular hardware security method that offers enhanced encryption and IC anti-counterfeiting. PUFs can function dependably even in the presence of voltage and temperature changes. In this thesis, we investigate the security provided by PUFs and analyze trade off’s between various metrics, including dependability, energy use, and uniqueness. Benefits of sub-threshold PUF functioning, as well as the employment of ring oscillator and delay-based arbitrator PUFs in low power applications, are assessed.
