SANJAY KUMAR NAYAK, Soumalya Ghosh · 2023

The Internet of Things (IoT) has emerged as a promising new paradigm in recent years, with the potential to impact a wide variety of industries and fields by the simple act of connecting more physical “things” to the Internet. Despite its prominence as a facilitator of many next-generation applications, it has brought further difficulties to overburdened networks. The Internet of Things is already a reality, most notably in health and smart environment applications, where a plethora of low-power sensors and actuators are being integrated to enhance quality of life and bring novel services to the public. After its first success, numerous researchers published articles aimed at assessing and enhancing RPL’s capabilities across a variety of use cases. In this article, we’ll go through the fundamentals of RPL and the pros and cons of using it across a variety of Internet of Things use cases. Furthermore, we conduct a comprehensive analysis of the literature on RPL, categorising studies by enhancement domain and service type. We also evaluate the efficiency, dependability, adaptability, robustness, and security of related RPL-based protocols. Then, we draw some final conclusions and talk about where RPL may go and how it could be used on the future Internet.
