An Overlook on Security Challenges in Industry 4.0

R. Ramya, S. Sharmila Devi, Y. Adline Jancy · 2023

Industries are embellishing in Industry 4.0 era by interconnecting sensors, complex machinery, and cyber parts through communication networks. Industrial Internet of things (IIoT) aims to achieve smarter manufacturing, logistics, packaging, and all control operations. Industry 4.0 paves an end-to-end framework for the interfusion of Internet of data (IoD), Internet of services (IoS), and IoT. Intensive data from the interconnected sensors and devices are identified, traced, and analyzed by IoD. IoS provides the architecture for managing cloud services and edge devices. Employment of Industry 4.0 faces immense challenge in technology, obtaining data, security breaches, environmental challenges, and few others. Security challenge in IoT demands more attention and this can be of any form like insecure communication protocol, cyber attacks in data storage, and lack of trust with second parties and company in preserving company’s data. This chapter gives an overview on various security blitzes on target entities such as field devices, industrial control systems, and communication networks. The necessity for protecting data is also discussed.
