The first chapter deals with the fundamentals starting from the definition of image processing , clarifies what an image is all about and what constitutes an image, and then discusses the need for an image to be processed. The types of images – binary, black and white, grayscale, and color – are briefly explained with ample clarity. The many areas in which image processing is applied are also dealt with. The chapter also details, with illustrations, how to install image processing tools. A step-by-step procedure along with screenshots is provided for OpenCV installation. Afterward, the prerequisites to learn image processing are provided, followed by a quiz and review questions. The chapter ends with further reading suggestions.
