The Role of 5G in Smart Transportation
Mansha Swami, Sankalp Swami · 2023
Modern mobility applications have been gaining in popularity in the 21st century. Examples include driverless cars, autonomous vehicles, traffic management through GPS, and sensor-based intelligent transportation applications, traffic signal priority, accident prevention systems involving crash prediction alerts, advanced vehicle control and safety systems (AVCS), emergency vehicle management (EVM), real-time passenger information for transit operations, and advanced driver assistance systems. None of these would have been possible without high-speed internet connectivity. Tesla, Toyota, and others have been experimenting with traffic park setups for over a decade now and trying to run driverless cars without the glitches, but they still face issues at times with object identification, especially during non-conducive weather conditions. The sensor sensitivity indices are being assessed in laboratories to try and find solutions. But with the 5G revolution, 100 times faster speed than its predecessor, things will certainly become far more quickly traceable. The response times of all the above-mentioned technologies will significantly reduce. The aim of the chapter is to establish the role of 5G in transportation and reflect upon the related changes because of the introduction of a higher speed of connectivity. This chapter is divided into subsections, provides insight into each of the technologies that deal with high-speed connectivity, and compares the use of 4G in these technologies to the scenario wherein 5G will be implemented. The chapter concludes with a SWOT analysis of 5G technology for the transportation sector.
