Fundamentals of Bayesian Networks
Duncan Taylor · 2023
Chapter 6 deals with the use of Bayesian networks as a tool to assist in the evaluation of case observations. A gentle introduction is provided for the way that Bayesian networks function. This chapter provides step-by-step instructions for constructing Bayesian networks for criminal cases, when considering activity-level propositions. Three of the exemplar cases are worked through and have Bayesian networks developed using this method. Along the way, instructions about different aspects of Bayesian network construction, and the assumptions they implicitly represent, are provided. All cases are evaluated and compared back to the hand-derived Likelihood ratios from Chapter 5 so that not only the construction of the Bayesian network is clear but so too is the calculation that lies beneath.
