Performance Analysis of Secure MQTT Communication Protocol

Nowadays the growth of IoT is rapid and the MQTT protocol has become widely used in IoT communication. MQTT protocol does not come with strong security features except the username and password authentication. However, without TLS, the username and password are not good enough to secure communication. Therefore, the security and efficiency of MQTT protocol are the core basic issue. This paper discusses a method to secure the MQTT protocol via TLS and analysis of the performance. Using TLS in MQTT will encrypt the message transported from MQTT client to the server. The packet was analyzed using Wireshark, it showed that applying TLS into MQTT will encrypt the message in the network traffic. In a nutshell, security in MQTT protocol is important as MQTT has become a de facto standard for IoT.
