Comprehensive Analysis of Edge Computing towards Adaptive Streaming for Enhanced QoS

5G offers effective data to users at extraordinary speed. However, the data and bandwidth requirements have increased multifold and growing exponentially because of a higher dependency on cloud and data servers for computational and storage requirements. Low computational power combined with limited storage in IoT and smart systems necessitates moving the cloud to the edge, facilitating users with the requisite computational power and storage space with the least possible latency and jitter. This, however, may impose restrictions on mobility. Delay-sensitive critical mobile systems may need to establish communication for effective decision-making, which dictates the requirement for a bigger network with enhanced security. Edge computing (EC) facilitates users with improved latency, a better quality of service, and enhanced security by computing at the location where data is collected or used. EC brings the requisite services near the edge of a network, thereby extending the Cloud Computing (CC) capabilities wherein the IoT data is gathered and processed at the edge rather than sending data back to a data centre or cloud, thereby enhancing the overall QoS and thus supporting a new variety of services and applications. Mirrored - Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over Edge Server can significantly improve the overall QoS of multiple users downloading trending OTT or educational content without putting a significant strain on the core backhaul network, as proposed in the paper for future research.
