Managing Terminology in CAT Tools

Ensuring consistency of terminology is one of the most important aspects of the translator&s;s work for many reasons, and not only for quantitative ones. The strengths of spreadsheet software lie in its capabilities dealing with numbers, formulas, etc., rather than text. Given the importance of ensuring the quality and consistency of translators&s; terminological work for all the stakeholders in the translation process, CAT tools typically provide another database alongside the translation memory: the termbase. Term extraction consists of identifying ‘the core vocabulary of a specialized domain&s;. Term extraction can be monolingual or bilingual. Most CAT tools provide a range of formats in which the people can import and export the data in their termbase. Finally, as technology evolves, the people can expect that CAT tools will gradually increase access to terminological resources in real-time from within the CAT environment.
